Type of Dentures

Dentures restore the form and function of missing teeth by filling in and replacing gaps with artificial restorations called dental prosthetics. They come in two main forms: partial and full, and they can either be removable or fixed in place using dental implants.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are used when a patient still has healthy natural teeth intact and only need to fill in one or several teeth. The natural, healthy teeth serve as anchors for the dental appliance.

Partials may be either fixed or removable. A removable denture (also known as a dental bridge) uses a metal framework to connect the dental appliance in place. Fixed partials require that a dental crown be placed on each tooth surrounding the gap, which serve as anchors for the bridge. Fixed partials last for several years with proper care and may prove more comfortable than removable ones, which may slip or slide in the mouth.

Full, Or Complete, Dentures

Full, or complete dentures replace an entire missing set of teeth. These come in two forms: conventional and immediate. Conventional dentures are placed after all remaining teeth have been removed and the gums have been given two or three months to heal. Immediate dentures are those placed without delay and often used as a temporary solution while the patient’s permanent, customised dental restorations are being created.

Denture FAQs

What Do They Feel Like?

The sensation of wearing something on your gums may feel odd at first and can cause some minor soreness and discomfort initially. The discomfort should ease as your mouth adjusts to the dental appliance.

Will They Affect How I Talk?

Dentures may initially impact how you speak, but as you practice and adjust, your speech should improve and normalise over time. If you notice that your teeth click when speaking, contact our office.

Will People Know I’m Wearing Fake Teeth?

At LifeCare Dental we design your dental prosthetics to look and feel just like natural teeth. We customise the fit and finish to provide you with both a functional and aesthetic solution that lasts for years. Whether speaking, chewing, or smiling, your teeth should not draw any undesired attention.

Are Dentures Costly?

Different types of dentures require different types of placements, materials, and maintenance, all of which impact the total cost of your treatment. Dentures are, however, a cost-effective investment for providing you with years of improved confidence, comfort, and dental function.

How Do I Care For Dentures?

Our dentists will provide detailed instructions on how to care for your dentures. Proper care extends the life of your dentures. Adjustments may be needed to account for changes in the contours of your mouth and gums, and regular visits with us will ensure the best fit.
